T-Mobile Network Evolution

T-Mobile delivers a transformative 5G network experience from big cities to small towns and places in between. T-Mobile has the largest and fastest 5G network according to data from third-party benchmarking companies. On top of that, T-Mobile's 4G LTE network covers 99% of Americans. Learn more about our 5G network.

Across the industry, wireless companies have retired older network technologies as part of an important progression to ensure all customers can enjoy a more advanced 4G and 5G network. This page provides information on T-Mobile's efforts to retire these older technologies and help transition customers.

Moving customers who are on old networks onto modern, advanced high-speed networks means they will need to have phones and devices that can tap into the latest technologies. We'll ensure that we support our customers and partners through the transition. We regularly send notifications and everyone who needs to act will be given advanced notice and hear directly from T-Mobile.

Customers who move from older technologies to 4G/5G service will get

  • Real broadband speeds that can be many times faster
  • Enhanced public safety and 911 location accuracy capabilities that will make customers safer

Network security

T-Mobile, along with other wireless providers, follows network security standards set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). An older standard will retire on and will be automatically replaced with the most current version.

Most newer devices already meet current network security standards and will not be impacted. However, some older devices, typically introduced in 2017 or earlier, may still support voice calls and basic texting but could experience service disruptions, including:

  • Android & iOS: Inability to manage features like call forwarding, call waiting, caller ID, or fixed dialing numbers via device settings
  • Android only: Issues sending large multimedia messages, such as photos or videos

Proactively upgrading your phone will help ensure uninterrupted service and full access to supported features.
